Middletown Racial Justice Coalition
Middletown, CT

Precious Price, Beverly Lawrence, Diana Martinez, of the Middletown Racial Justice Coalition, speak to their experiences with racism and oppression which has motivated them to lead liberation work in Middletown, and the positive impact they feel being part of this supportive group of women of color. They talk about the organizing successes their group has had in getting a new Superintendent of Schools hired who is black and supports meaningful equity work in the district and work to support youth led social change. Precious details how words such as “empower” and “achievement gap” are problematic to meaningful equity work that centers people of color. They also speak to the challenges they face as Black and Latinx women trying to do equity work in white dominated spaces, and Precious speaks on the counseling she received from David Addams at the Graustein Memorial Fund which helped her to move into doing this organizing based equity work.

*Precious was the only person of the three interviewees who elected to have their portrait taken at the Middletown celebration.
